It’s amazing how some projects drag on. My Miata, which still has a pile of parts in the living room, lost priority due to 2 weeks of rallies and the prep that was required for that on the Exocet.

I don’t remember when these LRB Speed full door panels showed up, but it was probably about a month ago. When trying to replace my door cards, I found that my originals were too thrashed behind the scenes (broken clips etc) to use and that buying new OEM ones wasn’t really in the cards.

So I found these LRB speed door panels which are great but a little too racy.

So I made some upholstery to mount on there and put some 1/8th inch foam on the top. I also made some waterjet cut mazda-logo speaker covers.

Driver’s side is more or less done. Passenger probably tonight. The window crank is a work in progress still.

For a bit I thought "that's not gonna look good, it's both too plain and too racy to work" and then saw the picture of the driver-side door and SPLOOSH.

Damn, that looks great with the upholstered panel!  I need to redo the door cards on the El Camino and I can pick up aluminum panels cheap.  I never considered adding texture back like you have, it is a really great idea.  Thanks for sharing it!

Nope, ordered online from Ponoko. Really reasonable prices.

Thanks! I was actually inspired by how the original Miata door panels work.

Hahaha, yeah. I was definately running a risk of being too racey, but I really like how it came out. It walked back the perfect amount.

They were WAAAAY less work than making the little bits of upholstery .

You should talk to LRB speed. They have a bit of a backlog of orders, but they have pretty reasonable prices and seem like a good husband-wife team. I bet they could make something if they had measurements or took a trip to a junkyard.

I think it’s because of the black pieces consistently contrasting against the metal, and the car’s white paint, that it successfully avoids looking like vape bro metal shop amateur hour .

Nice, I have some Techno Toy Tuning bits, I just checked and they don’t have much for Miatas. That makes sense since there are other people doing that. T3 makes a lot of Nissan and Toyota stuff. Highlander just got the strut bar.

Haha yeah, that’s actually something that’s tough to balance on car interiors. I see a lot of Miatas with TONS of brushed metal. The thing about brushed metal is that it washes out and looks cheap if you don’t give it contrasting material to balance off of. Dark materials obviously work better than light since they are stronger to match.

Okay, working on a project for my brother-in-law that I’ve had in mind for a while. How do you think this will do in 0.06" steel?

Should work pretty well! I assume it’s vector so it should be easy enough to cut?

Sweet. Yes, vector. I went through and edited all the letters necessary to make sure there were no “floating” pieces disconnected from the whole. I have a note into them asking if they think any areas will be too weak at this thickness. Thinking about doing it 24" wide, for the office in his shop.

Hmm, might do. I was considering making it myself
